When I walk into someone’s office or workroom & look around at their own
inspiration board, I feel like I can get an immediate sense of whether they are
a left-brained (logical & analytical) or a right-brained (spontaneous &
intuitive). Now I know that
all
creative’s make the most of their right brains, but some of us creative minds
tend to toss a large percentage of mathematics, meticulousness, &
left-brained order into our creativity. Where does your board fall on the
spectrum? Are you a full-blown right-brained creative type, or are you obsessed
with detail & symmetry? Check out your own inspiration boards — do they
reflect the way you work?
The left-brained creative type tends to start with the pieces & work up
to a whole. They are the analytical types who create extremely detailed,
geometrically exact designs. When I look at these examples, I see someone who added
pieces to the inspiration board until it was an entire picture from start to
finish. I see pieces that fit together perfectly, like a puzzle, & a completely
cohesive color scheme.

Perhaps the most left-brained of creative professions is the field of
architecture. Architects are masters at blending science & art. It would
shock me to find anything but an exacting, perfectly spaced & aligned
inspiration board in an architect's space. When creating mood boards, there are
those who stay within the lines & those who do not even see the lines. I
would suggest that the designers of some of these mood boards have somewhat of a
few left-brain tendencies. Each bit seems to have been meticulously added to
the whole, creating a board that is precisely full without moving further than
any of the edges.
As you go to the right-brained side of the creative world, bulletin boards tend
to loosen up. There is no longer this bit-by-bit conception of the entire board.
Rather, the ideas seem more like they are plucked out of some creative place &
mixed with ease. These boards seem like a happy medium between the precision of
a left-brained creative & the lack of restrictions of a right-brained
creative.

Right-brained creative’s cannot seem to stop their creativity. Their ideas
seem to spill out of them on any given surface. The little scraps of
inspiration find their way onto other surfaces: tacked to the wall, pasted on
the ceiling — wherever their designers can find the room to articulate their
ideas. The characteristic of a right-brained creative type is the presence of
chaotic creativity. Right-brained creators think of the large picture &
then make it come about whether it is right or not.
