Birthday Girl! (Sunday Snapshot #4)

Today is my birthday!


All I can think about is having one of these yummy pink cupcakes! Although I have had too many sweets already, I want to share another one with you! I want to spotlight an artist named Will Cotton.

I first Came across this artist in Elle Décor way back in 2008 & I knew I was going to own a piece of his artwork someday. He makes his paintings look so real, almost like photographs.

Cotton bases his fairy-tale drawings & paintings on traditional scale models of confections he constructs right in his New York studio. Whether armed with a paintbrush or a pastry bag, Cotton creates places like girls lounging on cotton-candy clouds & landscapes reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, but these places aren’t as sweet as they appear. He says “These are places where desire is everywhere, yet real fulfillment is impossible….The sweets are a metaphor for pure indulgence—they exist for pleasure and nothing else.”

He has shown at various art galleries including his most recent earlier this year in Los Angeles. He has a loyal fan base, other than me, including collectors like Tom Ford and Katy Perry. Katy went as far as to have him as the set designer for her music video “California Gurls”. You can see the similarities in Will Cotton’s painting and Katy’s “Teenage Dream” CD cover below (Katy is on the left).

He also has done some sculptures, like his "Insatiable" piece he did in 2008. Believe it or not but it is made up of polystyrene, acrylic polymer, pigment, & gypsum!

Shut the front door!

All too often, the door becomes an abandoned product in our home. Chock full of potential for individuality & flair, it's just one of those things we tend to think of solely as a functional item.

Lately there seems to be a buzz on the street about brightly painted front doors. There are few limitations about what color can be used, so homeowners & builders are taking full advantage of this trend. Painting the entry door an amazingly yummy color brings instant personality to a home, adding a delicious jolt of style to its curb appeal.

 The front door is a huge part of your home's first impression. It's a transitional part of the facade that makes a statement about who you are, & what people can expect when they walk into your home. Not to mention, it has an impact on the value of your pretty home.

Next time when you are walking up to your door, ask yourself 'Is it a standard issue model or does it pop?' or 'Does it tell something about your personality?' For little investment, as little as a can of paint, swapping out the your front door can make a tasty & scrumptious impact!

Sunday Snapshot #3

Here is a dazzling Sunday treat for you that is even brighter than your regular old firework!

The Texas-based artist Gabriel Dawe creates sculptures out of multi-colored thread. Dawe is trained in graphic design, & he debuted the sculpture at Dallas Contemporary last fall through this past January, it was part of the Plexus series. This latest installation, Plexus No. 4, has more than 50 miles of thread winding through the air. The thread is strung up on wooden planks to form floating, rainbow-colored sculptures.

If I had an actual design studio, time to make a design based off of this, & no hyper puppy, this would be a really great addition to my home.

It’s been a long week, already & that’s not to say it has been bad. Mine has been filled with evening walks, playing with my sweet puppy, red lines on projects, kick off meeting at work (for the project I will be lead project manager for!), and lots of productivity.

I’m excited for a relaxing weekend though, really who wouldn't be?!, & just enough down time to recharge for next week.

Snapshot Sunday #2

Here is an artistic treat for everyone to enjoy!


I was in awe of how the artist created these pieces of art and how they turned out so detailed. An artist named Keira Rathbone, which she is most famously known for these types of pieces. She created the artwork by using vintage typewriters and typing out letters, numbers and symbols in place of brush strokes or pixels. The results are the delisiously detailed images!

Now, that is what I call creative!

Colorful Treat You Can Actually Eat!

Unlike some of my other treats, these colorful little beauties are actually something you can taste!

I was reading the Kravet newspaper they have at their showroom the other day & found a section called 'Stumble Upon'. It was like the app stumbleupon! which  is a discovery engine that finds the best of web, suggested just for you...you will discover photos, videos, & web pages.

Anyway, in this section I came across a cool blog that had a post about edible crayons they made. Yes, i said it...EDIBLE CRAYONS! Now for all those worrying parents out there of children & animals that like to eat crayons...have no fear! You can make your very own...mostly nutritious...edible crayons! It also is very easy to do!

They made them by grinding up similiar colored foods like nuts or fruit & moistened with melted marshmellow, then put the paste into crayon molds & let the crayon molds air dry, until they become dry like biscuits. You can't bake the molds or they will change their colors.

These made me think...wouldn't they be great in Elementary schools? Or even as a fun lesson about food or colors...you could make the crayons in class & they would get to draw with them afterwards! I don't know about you, but if I were a kid, that would be a lesson I would actually listen & love!

This has inspired me to go make my own, & hopefully tasty, edible crayons! I'll let you know how it goes!
